2012
Things have been quiet on this site of late. The real party is happening over on OhBeery.Me my new beer blogging site. If you’ve somehow managed to trawl through the shit I have posted here in recent years you will find the occasional, and somewhat out of place, beer piece. Well, after putting off the inevitable and a chat with one of my more entrepreneurial friends, I bit the bullet and jumped...

Contagion
Outbreak for 2011 from Steven Soderbergh. All star “what could happen” which will have you never touching your face or anyone else again. Documentary style shooting adds to the drama. 7/10

When not posting shit on this site, or writing about beer on OhBeery.Me I help produce The Bleed. A creative magazine funded by the good people at Northumbria University. In the last five months we have produced two issues that I am immensely proud of. The new issue, or Volume One Issue One, has just been released. It’s available in and around Newcastle and is completely free of charge.

In Time
Time is Money in this perfect of example of great trailer, poor movie. A convoluted sci-fi yarn which runs out of steam about 25 minutes in. Timberlake continues to prove that The Social Network was a one-off performance. 4/10

Hugo
I have never, in all my life, been as mesmerised by a film as I was by Hugo. The story, cast, set design, direction are perfect. I don’t have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to describe quite how fantastic this motion picture really is. Most importantly Hugo is a love letter to the magic and wonder of the silver screen.
3D is a medium I am completely indifferent about. It’s a gimmick...

Kung Fu Panda 2
Dreamworks up their game and shit all over Cars 2. Sumptuous design, combining masterful CGI and gorgeous hand drawn Miyazakiesque animation. Family fun with Van Damme and Jackie Chan to boot. 7/10

How did this get made! Incredible, but absolutely awful. 2/10

The A-Team
Overly complicated and flawed but not as shit on second viewing. The addition of Boy George would have helped. 4/10

The Rock
Cage! Connery! On Alcatraz! To paraphrase long haired SAS operative John Patrick Mason. “Michael Bay! I should have known, you piece of shit”. Guilty pleasures come no more guilty or pleasurable. 9/10

Red Dawn
Swayze replaces fancy foot work with an itchy trigger finger in this classic US invasion movie from John Milius. Thin on plot, high on bodycount. Republican sensibilities have never been this much fun. Wolverines!!!!! 6/10

Evolution
A fun monster movie from Ivan Reitman. Surprisingly good effects, a gag laden script and a quality cameo from Dan Ackroyd. 6/10

The American
George Clooney excels in this beautiful shot slow burner. The attention to the gun smiths craft is a joy to watch, as is the subtle symbolism. 7/10

Captain America: The First Avenger
Joe Johnston takes his Rocketeer know how and creates a superhero origin story up there with Iron Man. Period costume combined with real gung-ho spirit. And a quality nod to Winter Soldier. Forties fun. 8/10

After a fair few stinkers Woody Allen returns to form with this sweet and subtle love letter to the French capital. Je T’aime 7/10

Thanks Steve
jobs
Yesterday I met up with long time friend @Commutrx. It’s been months since we’ve seen each other and over many coffees we caught up on what each of us has been up to since our last meetup. It seemed like we consciously avoided one subject, Steve Jobs. Instead we took a stroll to the Apple Store to read the hundreds of post it note messages of condolence that adorned the windows of the store,...

Blade Runner – The Final Cut [Blu-Ray]
Ridley Scotts’ 1982 sci-fi dystopia looks even better in glorious high definition. The cityscapes and set design sparkle with neon while the masterful direction takes the audience of a two hour lesson in humanity. A truly visionary work from a director at the top of his game. 9/10.

Point Break [Blu-Ray]
“Surfers robbing banks” What’s not to love about that concept? Even Keanu’s awful performance as Johnny Utah can’t spoil this classic buddy cop movie. The film that put Dirt Dancing to bed for Swayze and the Steadicam chase sequence is still a cinematic masterpiece. Hang 8 out of 10 dudes

Backdraft [Blu-Ray]
Ron Howards 1991 fire fighting thrill ride hasn’t just held up over the years, it’s got better. The use of practical effects, especially in the finale, is dizzying with knockout performances from Russell, Baldwin and a pre-gurning De Niro. Hot stuff 8/10

Green Lantern
Marks and Spencer clotheshorse Ryan Reynolds tries his best with a poor script and confused direction in this first big screen outing for the DC comic icon. While character designs of the Lanterns is surprisingly good the rest is…well…a bit shit. 5/10

Killer Elite
The trailer was “Rocking Like A Hurricane,” the actual film….isn’t. With a worryingly low spectacular set piece ratio, it’s more Killer Mediocre than Elite . Statham / Owen battering seven bells out of each other in the hospital was fun but the “MFWIC” line was so terrible I wanted to walk out. 5/10

The West Wing Season 1-7
(A review two years in the writing) Arguably, and in my opinion, THE greatest TV show of all-time. Aaron Sorkin created linguistic powerhouse of a show charting the two terms of the Bartlet democratic campaign. An exemplar ensemble cast, incredible set design and unbelievable direction. A show like no other. Flawless.

Brussels and Back
So we are back from a pretty epic three day jaunt to Brussels and Bruges. The Beer festival was fun as ever but this year the highlight was the other bars we visited and the people we met. Oh…and the beer we drank. Simply amazing stuff. I need to find the time and write it all up. One things for sure, it’ll be entertaining.
Cheers!

A few days ago I posted a link to the letter Canadian politician Jack Lyton left to his party and all Canadians. These chalk tribute photos are stunning and capture perfectly the effect that politicians can have on people when they aren’t self serving. Beautiful.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Andy Serkis is King of the swingers in this clever re-imagining of the Sci-fi staple. A phoned in performance from Franco and a woeful nod to original (you’ll know when you see it) doesn’t detract from this solid monkey laden romp. Hail Caesar! 7/10
